For the females of the species homo sapiens—at the earliest conceivable period of its existence—the horizontal positioning of the body must have had the greatest advantages. It made pregnancy easier for them. . . . Proceeding from this consideration, one may perhaps venture to ask: Mightn’t walking erect, in general, have appeared earlier in men than in women? In that case, the woman would have been the four-footed companion of the man, as the dog or cat is today.7

Women, however, are not the only social group to be historically dismissed from the category of true thinkers and walkers. As we move in this chapter to consider philosophical, spiritual, environmental, and political walks, not only do we consciously diversify walking literature (a task, perhaps surprisingly, still deeply necessary), but we also think pointedly about whose curious walks and thoughts get recognized. How might a network philosophy of curiosity break these biases and open up new patterns of recognition in this space?
